Domestic manufacturing is dead; long live domestic manufacturing and their vibrant supply networks!!
To be sure, a flatter world brings more complexity to network design, so manufacturers need to play globally in terms of value chain decisions to remain competitive. However, in the U.S., the impact of the manufacturing value chain accounts for a disproportional amount of the domestic economy and of the private investments in R&D. And investments in R&D play a critical role in economic growth. Technological developments underway are opening up a whole new gamut of more technically challenging and even more rewarding manufacturing and supply chain jobs. In addition, these new technological developments are changing the economics of production and logistics, which should stimulate greater domestic manufacturing and supply chain entrepreneurship. Domestic manufacturing is dead; long live domestic manufacturing and their vibrant supply networks!!
